THE CONCRETE FACTS OF LOVE
essay film, 2019
In the 1920s, the surrealist André Breton organized a series of discussion sessions to investigate sexuality, with the aim of establishing so-called “objective” truths about love. This short film reassembles found footage to critically engage with those ideas, juxtaposing excerpts from surrealist conversations about female beauty with images of the production of sex dolls. It both ridicules and interrogates these historical notions, exposing their absurdity while also acknowledging their lasting influence on how the female body is perceived and constructed.
